WARSHIPS
New or old,
cutting-edge or decommissioned, warships are in our blood. Here's a
collection of links to surface combatants of all kinds. We love salt and
steel. If you do too, this page is for you.

A
website dedicate to the last gunship. USS Turner Joy, a Forrest Sherman
class destroyer, is on display at the Bremerton boardwalk, in Bremerton,
Washington.
USS Fletcher (DD-445/DDE-445)
They didn't call her The Fighting Fletcher for nothing. Awarded 15
battle stars for WWII service, and five for Korean War service, USS Fletcher
earned her place in the History books.
USS Fletcher (DD-992)
As
a Fletcher Sailor recently reminded me, it wouldn't do to have a link to the
Fletcher of the past, without including a link for the Fletcher of the
present.
USS King (DLG-10/DDG-41)
.jpg)
USS Denebola (AF-56)
A
former Denebola Sailor wrote me a nice email, reminding me that our warships
would never be able to accomplish their missions without the support of
supply and service ships, like this grand old gal. Too often unsung, the
crews of these fine ships are heroes too.
USS Askari (ARL-30)
A
Vietnam-Era Sailor wrote to tell me about his old ship. Although he didn't
have a website to offer, he wanted to make sure that his ship wasn't
forgotten. So, we took the liberty of tracking down a webpage dedicated to
the Askari. The page we found wasn't a dedicated site, but a component page
of the Mobile Riverine Force Association website. If you know of a site
dedicated to the Askari, please send us an email.
USS Idaho (BB-42)
From Saipan, to Okinawa, to Kwajalein, to Tokyo Bay, USS Idaho was a force
to be reckoned with in the Pacific. For her service in WWII, the Idaho was
awarded seven Battle Stars. Even damage by Kamikazes couldn't keep this
veteran battleship out of action for long.
NavyThriller.Com extends a thank you
to the wife of one of the Idaho's crew of heroes, both for supporting her
Sailor, and for bringing this great warship to our attention.
USS Picking
(DD-685)
Another great greyhound. USS Picking earned five Battle Stars in World War
II, one in Korea, and even saw action in Vietnam. The wife of a former
Picking Sailor wrote to ask me what happened to her husband's old ship. The
Picking was sunk as a target vessel in February of 1997. To some, that
might seem a sad end for such a faithful ship. We don't see it that way.
Target ships give us critical data on the effectiveness of our weapons
systems, and provide vital experience to the warriors of the future. USS
Picking wasn't cast aside. She went out with honor, still doing her part to
further the Navy's mission.
USS Mississippi (CGN-40)
.jpg)
A
website dedicated to the hardworking men of the USS Mississippi (CGN-40),
the last ship to bear the name. An excellent website, commemorating a fine
ship.
USS Leahy
(CG-16)
Ah, the Leahy cruisers... What a beautiful class of ships... Long, sleek,
and powerful, how could any Surface Warrior see one and not fall in love?
This site is dedicated to the lead ship of the class, stricken from the
rolls now, but not from the hearts of the men who walked her decks.
USS Noxubee
(AOG-56)
A
tribute to USS Noxubee, and the
Patapsco Class
Gasoline Tankers, the ships
that kept the rest of the fleet moving.
USS Savage (DE-386)
.jpg)
USS Savage was one of thirty U.S. Navy Destroyer Escorts manned by U.S.
Coast Guard crews during World War II. Assigned to escort convoys of troops
and supplies across the Atlantic, the Savage and her sister ships saw a lot
of combat action, and still managed to see over 1000 troop and supply ships
to their destinations without the loss of a single vessel.
USS Saint Paul (CA-73)
A
website dedicated to USS Saint Paul, better know to history as 'The Fighting
Saint.' Thanks to a first-time Deck Plate visitor for bringing this great
ship to our attention.
USS Des Moines (CA-134)
USS Des Moines (CA-134) is the last of the Navy's World War II era heavy gun
cruisers. The battle to move the ship to Milwaukee as a floating naval
museum has been lost. Although we don't know the details, there's
apparently a possibility that USS Des Moines can go to Florida as a
monument or museum ship. We certainly hope so. This fine old warship
deserves a fate more fitting than the scrap yard.
USS Orleck (DD-886)
The official website of the USS Orleck Association. The Orleck was the last
and longest serving of the FRAMed destroyers. A proud ship, with a proud
history.
USS Edson (DDG-946)

dedicated to preserving the destroyer, USS Edson, as a
naval museum for future generations to enjoy.

an enormous heart, USS Knox proudly served our country for twenty-three
years, from 1969 until 1992.
Adams Class Veterans Association
.jpg)
An
excellent website dedicated to working with all Adams class groups and
organizations to Save, Restore and Preserve the USS Charles F. Adams DDG-2,
and educate the public on the rich naval heritage of the Adams class
guided-missile destroyers.
USS Newport News (CA-148)
A
great website for a great ship -- the Gray Ghost, USS Newport News
(CA-148). Some of the Audio and Video clips in their archives are
astounding. Also visit
My Love of Thunder, another website about
this legendary heavy cruiser. If you want to walk the decks and fell the
thunder of the big guns, these websites are the place.
USS Henry B. Wilson (DDG-7)
The first guided missile destroyer to make a WESTPAC deployment, the Henry
B. Wilson was blazing trails from the first day she slid down the ways. At
the time of her commissioning, she was the largest warship ever constructed
on the Great Lakes. Like all of the Adams Class DDGs, she was a thing of
great beauty and terrible power.
USS Davidson (FF-1045)
.jpg)
A
lot of warship websites are barebones arrangements. Not so with
USSDavidson.Com. There's a bit of everything here - art, audio files, a
forum, and just about everything in between. Check out this site. You'll
be glad you did.
USS Tortuga (LSD-26)
.jpg)
Chuck's Home Port is the website of Chuck Westbrook, a proud USS Tortuga
Sailor who built the site to honor his ship and the men who served in her.
USS Bennington (CV-20/CVA-20/CVS-20)
.jpg)
Built in the closing days of World War II, this Essex class carrier saw
action almost from the day her keel first got wet. USS Bennington provided
strike support for the invasion of Iwo Jima, strike and aerial
reconnaissance missions for Okinawa, and took part in the sinking of the
Japan's super battleship, the Yamato.
USS Mansfield (DD-728)
USS Mansfield was part of America's wartime naval build-up, which saw United
States Shipyards deliver some 390 destroyers to the Navy during the course
of World War-II. Her active service spanned World War-II, Korea, and
Vietnam.
USS Wilkes-Barre (CL-103)
USS Wilkes-Barre took part in strikes against the Philippines, China and
Indo-China, the Ryukyu islands, the Bonin and Volcano islands and Japan. In
February of 1945, during the Iwo Jima campaign, she used her guns to shell
enemy positions ashore, a mission repeated in the Ryukyus in late March of
45, and against the Japanese home islands in July of the same year. When
suicide planes badly damaged USS Bunker Hill off Okinawa on 11 April,
Wilkes-Barre came alongside the stricken carrier to help fight her fires
and evacuate some of her crew.
USS Hugh Purvis (DD-709)
The Hugh Purvis Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to
preserving the history of this hard working destroyer. Her active service
spanned World War-II, Korea, and Vietnam.
USS Salisbury Sound (AV-13)
Originally laid down as USS Puget Sound, this legendary seaplane tender was
renamed USS Salisbury Sound on 5 June 1944, just two weeks before her
launching. The Salisbury Sound served the US Navy with distinction until
her decommissioning in 1967. Visit the website of the USS Salisbury Sound
Reunion Association, and spend a little time in the presence of the men who
crewed this fine ship.
USS Cochrane (DDG-21)
USS Cochrane was named for Vice Admiral Edward Lull Cochrane, the Navy's
supervisor of shipbuilding during World War II. Like all of the
Charles F. Adams class, Cochrane was a
heady blend of speed, beauty, and firepower. Take a moment to visit an
excellent website dedicated to an equally excellent warship.
USS New (DD/DDE-818)
.jpg)
USS New was named for Medal of Honor winner Private First Class John D. New,
United States Marine Corps. The only thing better than a tin can, is a tin
can named for an enlisted man. Drop by this website and walk the steel
decks one more time.
USS Morton (DD-948)
.jpg)
A
website dedicated to USS Morton, the 'saltiest ship in the fleet.'
USS Corry (DD/DDR-817)
DD-817, the third warship to carry the name of USS Corry, was launched in
July of 1945. She served until 1981, when she was struck from the US Navy
Registry, and sold to the Greek Navy. Rechristened Kriezis, she
continued to serve in the Greek Navy until 1994, just one year short of a
half century of duty.
USS Tattnall (DDG-19)
.jpg)
The second United States warship to bear the name of Commodore Josiah
Tattnall (7194-1871).
USS Floyd B. Parks (DD-884)
.jpg)
USS Floyd B. Parks, a 2425-ton Gearing class destroyer, saw combat action in
the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Her impressive service record included
support for nuclear tests in the Central Pacific Ocean in the 1950s, and
the evacuation of the Tachen Islands in 1955.

Mr. Dave Myerly.
